Resurrecting Identity: Lal Bihari returned to his hometown Khalilabad to obtain residence, income, and caste certificates for a bank loan for his handloom business. To his shock, he discovered that he had been declared dead on official papers in 1976 due to a bribe paid by his relatives to claim his land. Determined to regain his identity, he embarked on an unconventional path.
He kidnapped his nephew briefly and staged a scene with animal blood, hoping for a case that would prove his existence. He protested outside the Assembly, managed to enter and raised the slogan “Mujhe zinda karo” (Make me alive) before being expelled. Selling his property, he contested the 1988 Lok Sabha election and surprisingly earned about 1,600 votes.
In 1989, he challenged Rajiv Gandhi’s Amethi seat, seeking to countermand the election due to his “death.” While not successful, his story gained attention.
In 1994, after persistent efforts, he was finally recognized as alive, reclaiming his identity.
